EJB QL

EJB QL is based on the SQL-92 specification for defining various finder and select methods of entity beans with CMP. The EJB QL query string consists of three clauses: SELECT, FROM, and WHERE. Among other things, EJB QL offers a standard way to define relationships between entity beans and dependent classes by introducing abstract schema types and relationships in the deployment descriptor. EJB QL also defines queries for navigation using abstract schema names and relationships.

Difference between CMM and CMMi

CMM is a reference model of matured practices in a specified discipline for e.g. Systems Engineering CMM, Software CMM, People CMM, Software Acquisition CMM etc. But they were difficult to integrate as and when needed. So the CMMI evolved as a more matured set of guidelines and was built combining the best components of individual disciplines of CMM(Software CMM, People CMM etc). It can be applied to product manufacturing, People management, Software development etc etc. "I" represents integration.

One more reason why Perl can be good

An anonymous reader writes, "Wired News editor and former hacker Kevin Poulsen wrote a 1,000-line Perl script that checked MySpace for registered sex offenders. Sifting through the results, he manually confirmed over 700 offenders, including a serial child molester in New York actively trying to hook up with underage boys on the site, and who has now been arrested as a result. MySpace told Congress last June that it didn't have this capability." Wired News says they will publish Poulsen's code under an open-source license later this week.

GEGL and GIMP

GEGL is the Generic Graphical Library. In the near future, GEGL will be a generic, demand driven, graph based, efficient, image processing system.

Though GEGL can be used as standalone library, its primary purpose is to be backend for GIMP. At some step in the future integration of GEGL into GIMP will bring many major features to GIMP users.

GIMP's code base is in a phase, where gradual replacement of the code with GEGL based bits could happen, if GEGL was ready, but GEGL isn't ready yet.

Sony's NetJuke

Sony's announced a trio of new NetJuke stereo systems that'll let you transfer music from CDs or the ever-popular MiniDiscs to the built-in hard drive, as well as download tunes directly from Japan's AnyMusic service. Coming in at the top-end is the basic-black NAS-M90HD (seen above), boasting a beefy 250GB hard drive to back up the CD and MD options, and retailing for an even 100,000 Yen (about $836). That's followed by the NAS-M70HD ($670) and NAS-M50HD ($544), each of which pack 80GB hard drives, though the latter drops the MiniDisc support. All three systems also sport a 4.3-inch color display, support an optional USB WiFi adapter, and come pre-loaded with album information for some 350,000 titles courtesy of Gracenote's CDDB. Look for the NAS-M70HD and NAS-M50HD to hit Japan October 21st, with the NAS-M90HD to follow on November 18th.

GPU - Graphics Processing Unit

GPU, which is a graphics processing unit, is used primarily for 3D applications. It is a single-chip processor that creates lighting effects and transforms objects every time a 3D scene is redrawn. These are quite a strain to the CPU and are mathematically-intensive tasks. In fact lifting this burden from the CPU frees up cycles that can be used for other applications.

The first company to develop this breed is NVIDIA Inc. GeForce 256, a baby of this company, is capable of billions of calculations per second. It can process a minimum of 10 million polygons per second and has over 22 million transistors. Comparitively PentiumIII has only 9 million. Its workstation version called the Quadro, which was designed for CAD applications, can process over 200 billion operations per second and deliver upto 17 million triangles per second.

The GeForce NVIDIA GPU card is compatible with so many graphics API like OpenGL, Microsoft's DirectX, Intel's AGP technology and AMD's 3DNoW, while the Quadro is an OpenGl specific card with driver support for PentiumIII Xeon and AMD Athlon CPUS.

For better usage subclass JComponent instead of JPanel

If you're creating a new graphical component, subclass JComponent. It's the base class for all Swing components. JPanel, as a container, has some extra baggage for double buffering its children that you don't really want to deal with if you're building a new component.

In the old AWT world, Canvas was the base class for new components. Swing doesn't have a JCanvas, so some people make the jump to JPanel as a base class. Use JComponent instead; it's a cleaner solution.

Solving with Flush Streams

The problem usually appears with two programs on either side of a network socket having some kind of conversation. If you don't flush the output stream every time you say something, the data may not actually get written out to the socket, and the two programs will sit patiently, waiting forever for something to happen.

Typically, you can just call flush() after you write something important:

// OutputStream out;
// byte[] data
out.write(data);
out.flush();

If you're writing text data, you might use a PrintWriter for output. PrintWriter has a special constructor that lets you specify if the stream should be flushed after every newline:

PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(rawOut, true);

A PrintWriter created in this way will automatically flush itself whenever you write a line of text.

Cell Phone Ring Tones

A ring tone is the sound made by a mobile phone to indicate incoming calls. There are three basic types of ring tones:

* Monophonic * Polyphonic * True tones

Early phones only had the ability to play monophonic ring tones. These are short tunes played with simple tones.

Polyphonic means that multiple tones can be played at the same time using instrument sounds such as guitar, drums, etc.

True tones play actual pieces of music, along with lyrics and entire song backing music. They are commonly contained in MP3 or Wav format used as a ring tone on many symbian, or smart phones. Cell phone ring tones are now one of the most popular trends today. Ring tones have become a financial success for the record and movie industry.

Today's ring tones have come a long way from those monophonic and polyphonic tones. Now, they are called master tones or true tones, which are pure 15 to 20 second cuts of MP3s.

The ring tone market targets the youth. Record industries have an estimated sale of $4 Billion in 2004 world wide, and continually outsell all other musical sales online. This means the ring tone industry makes more money than any song downloaded in the internet.

The youth today are the number one customers of the ring tone industry. This is because of the need to be cool. This is one of their ways of expressing themselves.

If you have one of the latest mobile phone that allows true tones, you can avail of this trend. For starters, few ring tones come preloaded into your phone. They are usually categorized in your phone. First, you have those standard ring tones like beeps and buzzes and then there are the musical ring tones. Many phones today offer good selection of preloaded ring tones such as jazz classics and some Christmas ring tones.

For more ring tones, you can easily get one over the internet. There are thousands of web pages existing today that offers ring tone downloads.

To get a ring tone you simply just go to any site that offers this services, then search for the ring tone you want. After you find the ring tone, all you have to do is download it to your computer. After that, you connect your cell phone to your computer then upload the ring tone you selected to your cell phone.

Although some sites can offer these services for free. Most can charge you as much as 2 dollars per ring tone. Imagine hundreds or even thousands of people downloading at least five ring tones a day. The ring tone business is really one big business.

Competition for BlackBerry

BlackBerry and Windows Mobile are in their corners ready to battle for mobile supremacy. According to Sean Ryan, research analyst for mobile enterprise devices at IDC, the world of enterprise-class converged mobile devices is changing. BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM) has held the championship belt for a few years, but now there are contenders worthy of dethroning the reigning champ. "There's a lot of change right now," Ryan said. "The RIM technology is great. I don't want it to seem like RIM is going the way of the buffalo, but Microsoft leverages existing technologies, architectures and connections."

IDC said Microsoft's involvement with Motorola, Palm and others such as Nokia threatens to weaken RIM's dominance in the enterprise market.

For mobile users and managers, this influx of new devices presents an interesting challenge, Ryan said. BlackBerry users will be forced to re-evaluate their deployment, while companies looking for mobile solutions will have more options to choose from, which could create some confusion.

Ryan said Windows Mobile held a 10% market share in 2005, while BlackBerry trumped that with 46%. But the market shift, IDC suggests, will see Windows Mobile take the top spot by 2010, raking in 32.3% and leaving BlackBerry with a mere 14.9%.

Ryan said that one reason Windows Mobile will become a major contender is that it can extend Windows from the core to the device.

"Microsoft has the potential to grow -- a real strength for Windows Mobile operating system being the biggest growth engine," he said.

But not all are convinced. Jack Gold, principal and founder of J. Gold Associates, a Northborough, Mass.-based research and analyst firm, said he doesn't quite see Microsoft unseating BlackBerry just yet.

On the software front, however, Nokia is still a long way from reaching BlackBerry fame, according to Gold.

"Nokia has a long way to go with upgrading and improving its Intellisync acquisition before it achieves the functionality or ease of use of the BlackBerry BES experience," he said. "And Microsoft will appeal to push users primarily in those enterprises with the most current version of Exchange, which offers direct push technology. But there are a fair number of companies, especially in SMB, that are not on the current version of Exchange, as well as a reasonably large number of Lotus Notes companies, which don't benefit from the Exchange direct push capability. That's why third parties like Good [Mobile Messaging] exist -- to work with a number of different devices from a number of different platforms."

Security could also keep BlackBerry at the top of the heap, Gold said.

"Several BlackBerry clones have previously attempted to challenge RIM's reign in the enterprise market, but this is a more formidable strike," Ryan said. "The timing is right for a more powerful attack against RIM's BlackBerry as competitive forces converge. Nokia is offering an end-to-end solution of its own, while Motorola and Palm, among others, are leveraging Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 and Microsoft Exchange."

In other words, Ryan said: "It looks like [the mobile device market competition] is really heating up."

Time for surround Marketing

Five years ago, the New York Times (NYT) introduced advertisers with the opportunity to spend ‘sessions’ with online readers rather than to approach customers on the basis of mere ‘impressions’.

Today, the online advertising world is still going strong, trying to find the best quality page views, and the NYT-coined phrase ‘surround session’ has become an established term. But the technique’s effectiveness is not anywhere beyond unquestionable doubt.

Marketingterms.com describes surround sessions as ‘advertising sequence[s] in which a visitor receives ads from one advertiser throughout an entire site visit’. The session model places emphasis on real interaction between advertisers and audiences. A quick search on Google news shows that the phrase is hardly in use in the online world. It appears that despite the NYT’s acclaimed success with the method, the online industry at large is adopting similar techniques, but in wildly varying versions.

The fact that the campaign is hardly still creating a buzz in the industry is both indicative of the confused state online advertising is in and of general doubts that the method is really all that more precise, according to professionals quoted in an article on e-consultancy.com. The marketers at this consultancy however did underscore that the technique somewhat provides in a need because it communicated to them in old fashioned media buying terms. “Another appealing feature of the session model is that it better reflects offline media buying and measurement than the current CPM model. [...] talking about reach, frequency and pages, traditional marketers are working with a language they understand,” according to the article.

The New York Times is eager to capitalize on every bit of information its online readers give it in order to further its and advertisers’ brand names. It goes to such lengths that it is held back only by government imposed rules on cookie tracking, for the protection of privacy of the users.

Understanding Marketing

You see a fabulous girl/guy at a party. You approach them and say, "I'm fantastic in bed."

That's Direct Marketing.

You're at a party with a bunch of friends and see a fabulous girl/guy. You have one of your friends approach them, point at you and say, "She's/He's fantastic in bed."

That's Advertising.

You see a fabulous girl/guy at a party. You approach them to get their telephone number. The next day you call and say, "Hi, I'm fantastic in bed."

That's Telemarketing.

You're at a party and see a fabulous girl/guy. You get up, straighten your clothes, walk up and pour them a drink. You open the door, pick up their bag after it drops, offer them a ride, and then say, "By the way, I'm fantastic in bed."

That's Public Relations.

You're at a party and see a fabulous girl/guy. They walk up to you and say, "I hear you're fantastic in bed."

That's Brand Recognition.
